Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023

Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir is a Yarra Valley Pinot Noir grown on fine clay loam beside the Toolangi State Forest.

Another small crop in 2023, the third in a row here, and again the quality made up for it, with wines from the season marked by clarity and fine texture. Fruit from vines past twenty years old was handpicked across two days late in March, partially destemmed and fermented mostly as whole berries with ten per cent bunches included. Fourteen days on skins, then nine months in oak with a tenth new. Six vintages in, Kaspar Hermann has the site well read, and this bottling is where that shows at the lowest price.

Pure red fruit with a savoury edge, textural finesse and gentle tannin throughout. Serve at 14 degrees. Try it with quail, pork chops or a lentil and mushroom braise; a light chill suits it in summer.
