Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir 2024

Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir is an estate Pinot Noir from the cool Dixons Creek corner of the Yarra Valley.

Seven harvests in, and Kaspar Hermann rates 2024 the best version of this wine yet. After a run of cool years the Yarra got a mild spring and warm, sunny conditions through picking, which shows as fuller flavour and unmistakable regional character. Twenty-two-year-old vines were picked across two days late in March, partially destemmed and fermented as whole berries with ten per cent bunches, fourteen days on skins, then nine months in oak with a tenth new. The single-vineyard Dixons Creek address does the rest of the work.

Ripe cherry and plum with spice and a savoury finish, fuller than the cooler vintages but still fine-boned. Fourteen degrees. Roast duck, lamb backstrap or a mushroom and barley risotto; open it and drink it without ceremony.
