Toolangi Vineyard Shiraz 2021

Toolangi Vineyard Shiraz is an estate-grown Yarra Valley Shiraz made from the PT23 clone.

PT23 is the clone across both Shiraz blocks here, D and A, on fine clay loam in Dixons Creek. Hand-harvesting fell on 26 March in a prolonged 2021 season of cool nights and warm days, which gave long even ripening and sharp flavour definition. Ten per cent whole bunches went into a natural ferment with the balance as whole berries, and the wine matured ten months in French oak on lees. The vineyard dates from 1995 and remains one of the Yarra's less obvious addresses, which has kept the pricing sensible.

Perfumed and sinewy, dark berry with cracked pepper and a fresh acid line, tannins fine. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast lamb, duck sausages or a mushroom and thyme risotto; a light chill does it no harm in warm weather.
