Toolangi Vineyard Shiraz 2022

Toolangi Vineyard Shiraz is a whole-bunch-influenced Yarra Valley Syrah from a single vineyard.

Kaspar Hermann made his name with Chardonnay, but the Shiraz he has built here since arriving from Mount Mary is worth as much attention: sinewy, perfumed, cool-climate Syrah grown on the forest edge at Dixons Creek. All the Shiraz on the property is PT23 clone, spread over two blocks. The 2022 fruit came in over two passes in mid-March, fermented with forty per cent whole bunches and the rest destemmed to berries, and sat three weeks on skins before pressing to seasoned barriques for eleven months. Yields were small and the fruit was impeccable.

Dark sappy berries with pepper spice and violets, concentrated through the middle, tannins fine and long. Serve at 16 degrees. Lamb shoulder, beef cheeks or grilled mushrooms with thyme; there is no new oak to get in the way.
