Description
Valdesil Valderroa Mencia is a stainless-steel-raised red from old bush vines on the slate slopes of Valdeorras.
Valdeorras lies at the mountainous eastern edge of Galicia, a region of steep, slate-rich slopes where the Atlantic influence meets a more continental climate. Bodegas Valdesil is best known there for Godello, holding vineyards that include the Pedrouzos site planted in 1885, but the estate also makes a small quantity of Mencía. The fruit for this wine comes from old bush vines planted between 500 and 550 metres on south-facing slate around the village of O Moullón. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine then spends roughly eight months in tank. No oak is used, which leaves the variety's fine tannin and the stony character of the site to speak plainly.
Drinking well now and over the next four or five years. Serve at 16°C, or very lightly chilled, with grilled lamb, octopus a feira or a plate of chorizo.
