Description
A magnum of Valenciso's white Rioja, a blend of Viura and Garnacha Blanca fermented and raised in Caucasian oak.
Valenciso takes its name from its founders, Luis Valentín and Carmen Enciso, who met at Bodegas Palacio and struck out on their own in 1998, later building their cellar at Ollauri. They farm 27 hectares spread over seventeen plots within ten kilometres of the winery — Ollauri, Briones, Rodezno, Zarratón, Haro and Villalba — half of it owned outright, the rest on long renewable leases, and the vineyards have been moving to organic certification. The white is made in small quantity, around ten thousand bottles a year: the two varieties are pressed carefully, fermented together on natural yeasts and given a brief élevage in Caucasian oak, a tighter-grained wood than French oak that lends texture and a savoury edge rather than toast, leaving the quince, citrus pith and faint bitterness that mark the blend.
The magnum slows the ageing curve, so this will keep its freshness longer while gaining nutty complexity. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, paella or grilled prawns for a larger table.
