Description
Valenciso Tempranillo Blanco is a three-barrel white Rioja made from a white mutation of Tempranillo found in the estate's own vines.
Tempranillo Blanco is a rare mutation of the dark-skinned variety, traced to a discovery at Murillo de Río Leza in 1988 and admitted as a permitted Rioja variety by the Consejo Regulador in 2007. Not long after that, Valenciso noticed several of its own Tempranillo vines bearing white grapes with distinctive red striping on the skin; those vines were propagated and replanted. For years the tiny crop was simply blended into the Rioja Reserva, until 2020, when the vines were approaching twenty years of age and the estate decided to bottle the fruit on its own. Only three barrels are made. The winemaking mirrors that of the Valenciso Blanco, with a wild ferment and nine months on lees in Russian, steam-bent, untoasted oak barrels, so the wood shapes the texture rather than adding flavour.
Drink over the next few years and serve at 10–12°C, ideally in a larger glass; it suits roast pork, grilled white fish or a chicken and mushroom pie.
