Description

Verget Bourgogne Grand Élevage Blanc is a regional white Burgundy given a full barrel élevage more usually reserved for village wine.

Bourgogne Blanc is the region's base appellation, and in the Mâconnais it is often the vehicle for fruit that does not fit neatly into a village name. This cuvée is drawn mainly from the village of Péronne, between Viré and Azé, with a complement from Mâcon-Pierreclos. Verget, the house founded by Jean-Marie Guffens at Sologny, buys fruit rather than farming it, and applies the same winemaking across the range regardless of appellation level. That shows here: the wine was vinified entirely in oak, 15% of it new, and raised for eight months on its lees, which is a serious regime for a wine at this level. Winemaker Julien Desplans rates it among the best Bourgogne-level whites the house has made.

Ready now and good for three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a soft cow's-milk cheese.
