Description
Vins de la Madone IGP Urfé Sauvignons Gris et Blanc is a volcanic-soil white from the upper Loire led by the rarely bottled Sauvignon Gris.
IGP Urfé covers the hills of the Forez, in the Loire département well upstream of Sancerre and closer to Lyon than to Tours. It is mostly Gamay country, planted on volcanic and granitic ground, and white wine here is a sideline rather than a tradition. Gilles Bonnefoy's small vineyard is perched on the flank of the Purchon volcano in the Côtes du Forez, planted in 2011 on basalt. The blend runs 60% Sauvignon Gris to 40% Sauvignon Blanc; the Gris, a pink-skinned mutation, gives more texture and less overt greenness than its better-known sibling. Fermentation is with wild yeasts in stainless steel, and malolactic conversion is generally blocked to hold on to as much energy and acidity as possible.
Drink over the next two to three years while it is fresh. Serve at 10-12°C with goat's cheese, asparagus or pan-fried whiting.
