Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2019

Voyager Estate Chardonnay is a Margaret River Chardonnay from the cool Wallcliffe subregion.

Stevens Valley, in the Wallcliffe subregion at the southern end of Margaret River, is arguably the region's finest Chardonnay ground: gentle slopes of red-brown gravel over stony clay, with cooling breezes coming off the Indian Ocean close by. Nine clones are planted, led by Gin Gin for power and concentration and Bernard selections 95, 96 and 76 for restraint, texture and freshness. Eight blocks were hand-harvested, chilled overnight, whole-bunch pressed and moved to French oak with 38 per cent new for a natural ferment. Around forty per cent went through malolactic; ten months in barriques with regular stirring preceded a January 2020 bottling.

White peach and grapefruit with toasted hazelnut and a firm, saline finish. Serve at 12 degrees. Roast chicken, crayfish with butter or a mushroom risotto; there is enough structure here to reward five years in the cellar.
