Voyager Estate Chardonnay 2020

Voyager Estate Chardonnay is a barrel-fermented Chardonnay from Stevens Valley in Margaret River.

Cooling breezes off the Indian Ocean are the reason this part of Margaret River grows Chardonnay as well as it does, on the gentle slopes of Stevens Valley in the Wallcliffe subregion, where red-brown gravel sits over stony clay. The vineyard carries nine clones, each contributing something different: Gin Gin for power, the Bernard selections 95, 96 and 76 for restraint and finesse. Eight blocks were picked by hand, cooled overnight and whole-bunch pressed to French oak with 38 per cent new for a natural ferment. Selected parcels went through malolactic, and nine months in barriques with regular batonnage preceded bottling in January 2021.

Nectarine and lemon curd with a nutty, flinty edge and long saline acidity. Twelve degrees, in a decent-sized glass. Serve with scallops, roast chicken or a gruyere tart; it will drink well for another five to eight years.
