Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc 2020

Voyager Estate Sparkling Chenin Blanc is a traditional-method sparkling white from Margaret River.

Chenin is an unexpected choice for a house with this much Chardonnay pedigree, but the logic holds: Weightmans Block 1 ripens early and reaches full flavour at low sugar, which leaves plenty of natural acidity for a sparkling base. Fruit was hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed gently, settled overnight and fermented in stainless steel. After a short rest in tank the wine was bottled in late May for its second fermentation, then left on lees until October. Disgorgement came with a light dosage, four to five grams per litre. The variety has a long history in Margaret River, mostly in humbler wines than this.

Green apple, quince and lemon with a fine bead and a dry, chalky finish. Serve at 6-8 degrees in a white wine glass. It is very good with oysters, fried chicken, or a bowl of salted almonds before dinner.
