Voyager Estate Syrah 2023

Voyager Estate Syrah is a medium-bodied, organically grown red from Margaret River.

Note the change of name. Under Tim Shand the estate's Shiraz has been recast, picked earlier, made without new oak and aimed squarely at perfume and drive. Two organic blocks on the stoniest, least forgiving ground supply the fruit, which was hand-picked while still in the red-fruit spectrum. Around half went into the fermenter as whole bunches for structure, with 2 per cent Viognier included to lift the aromatics. Crushing maximised extraction over a short time on skins, and the wine spent five months in tank before bottling, with no new wood anywhere in the process.

Red fruit, dusty earth and white pepper, juicy and mid-weight, with graphite tension holding the finish. Serve it at 15-16 degrees, lightly chilled if the day is warm. Duck, grilled lamb cutlets, or a plate of charcuterie and cornichons.
