Weinbach Alsace Altenbourg Riesling 2022

Weinbach Alsace Altenbourg Riesling comes from a vineyard better known for Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris, and is only the second dry Riesling the domaine has made from it.

Altenbourg lies east of the Schlossberg and just below the Grand Cru Furstentum, on limestone and rich clays. That combination has long been considered ideal for Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat, and there are only a few plots of Riesling on the site. Historically those vines tended to be picked for sweeter styles, but warmer and drier growing seasons have allowed the domaine to pivot to dry Riesling here with real success. Weinbach, at the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg, farms biodynamically. Compared with the domaine's Rieslings from the granite of the Schlossberg, the Altenbourg version is more floral in character and chalkier in the way it finishes, reflecting the limestone beneath.

Drinking well now and likely to develop over eight to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast pork or a Vietnamese-style salad.
