Description
Weinbach Altenbourg Vendanges Tardives Pinot Gris is a late-harvest Alsace white bottled with 130 grams per litre of residual sugar.
The Altenbourg vineyard lies east of the Schlossberg, just below the grand cru of Furstentum, on soils of limestone and rich clay. That combination is considered an optimal site for Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat, and it is one of the lieux-dits most closely associated with Domaine Weinbach, based at the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg. Vendanges Tardives requires fruit picked well after the normal harvest, at legally stipulated minimum sugar levels, and Pinot Gris takes to it particularly well, holding weight and spice without losing shape. The Faller family have a long record with sweet whites of this kind, making wines that carry real depth while keeping mineral drive and freshness. Bottled with 130 grams per litre of residual sugar and balanced by mouth-watering acidity, this is crystalline and powerful rather than cloying.
Drinking now and good for twenty years or more. Serve at 8-10°C with foie gras, roast pork with apple, or a mild blue cheese.
