Weinbach Alsace Clos des Capucins Pinot Gris 2022

Weinbach Alsace Clos des Capucins Pinot Gris is a bone-dry old-vine Pinot Gris from the domaine's walled monopole at Kaysersberg.

The Clos des Capucins is the nine-hectare walled vineyard that surrounds the Weinbach cellars, named for the Capuchin friars who arrived in 1619 and planted the site. The domaine has been in the Faller family since 1898 and is farmed biodynamically, now under Catherine Faller and her sons Eddy and Théo. Alsace Pinot Gris has a reputation for residual sugar, and this wine is a deliberate departure from it: the fruit is pressed as whole bunches, fermented right through to dryness and raised for ten months in the large old oak ovals traditional to the region. Calling it an entry-level Gris undersells it, since the vines within the Clos are old and the fruit is a selection rather than a leftover. It is the domaine's first Pinot Gris in the range and it sets the tone for the rest.

Ready now and capable of six to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with pan-fried halibut, grilled salmon or mushroom risotto.
