Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Furstentum Gewürztraminer 2019

This is Domaine Weinbach's Gewürztraminer from Furstentum, a steep limestone grand cru on the slopes above Kientzheim and Sigolsheim.

Domaine Weinbach is based at the Clos des Capucins in Kaysersberg, an enclosure laid out by Capuchin friars in 1612 and sold off after the Revolution; the Faller brothers bought it in 1898, and it passed through Théo Faller to his wife Colette and their daughters Laurence and Catherine. Catherine has led the estate since 2016 with her sons Eddy and Théo. Its thirty-eight hectares are farmed organically and biodynamically, certified by Ecocert and Demeter, at yields of about 30 hectolitres per hectare. Furstentum sits high on a warm, south-facing slope on thin, stony soil over limestone and marl, and the warmth and sharp drainage suit Gewürztraminer, giving the variety's aromatic lift with more structure and mineral grip than it shows on heavier ground. Fruit is hand-harvested in successive passes and fermented slowly with indigenous yeasts in large old oak foudres, with no new wood; a grand cru Gewürztraminer of this kind is typically full and broad, and may carry some residual richness depending on the season.

Approachable on release and capable of a decade or more; serve at 10-12°C with Munster cheese, spiced Asian dishes or a fruit tart.
