Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling 2019

Domaine Weinbach's Riesling from the Schlossberg, the granite slope above Kientzheim that was classified in 1975 as the first of the Alsace grand crus.

The Schlossberg rises steeply behind Kientzheim and Kaysersberg in terraces facing south, on weathered granite that drains fast and warms quickly, and Riesling grown on it tends towards a firm, direct line rather than breadth. Domaine Weinbach takes its name and its home from the Clos des Capucins, a five-hectare walled enclosure below the hill established by Capuchin monks in 1612 and bought by the Faller brothers in 1898. Catherine Faller has run the estate since 2016 alongside her sons Eddy and Théo, farming 38 hectares of estate vineyard that are certified organic by Ecocert and biodynamic by Demeter; organic work began in 1990, biodynamics in 1998, and every plot was converted by the 2005 vintage. The Rieslings ferment spontaneously in large old casks rather than new wood, and yields across the estate average around 30 hectolitres per hectare.

Approachable on release but built to hold for a decade or more. Serve at 10-12°C with trout, choucroute garnie or a fresh goat's cheese.
