Description
Weinbach Alsace Grand Cru Schlossberg Riesling comes from three parcels of the family's highest vines at the very top of the slope.
The Schlossberg hill has long been counted among the world's great Riesling sites, a granitic outcrop rising north of Kaysersberg and Kientzheim to between 230 and 350 metres. Its reputation was established as early as the fifteenth century, and in 1975 it became the first vineyard in Alsace to be granted grand cru status. The Faller family of Domaine Weinbach, who farm biodynamically, are the largest landowners with eight hectares and bottle a series of Rieslings from the hill according to vine age and altitude. This wine is cropped from three parcels of their highest vines, right at the top of the slope, where the soils are shallow and rocky and therefore very mineral, the eroded granite carrying a reddish tinge and a high magnesium content. Altitude, low-vigour soils and low yields together give a deep but always dry and mineral Riesling with the freshness to balance its flesh. It was raised in large old casks for fourteen months.
Drink now or cellar for fifteen years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, choucroute or a spiced pork terrine.
