Description
Weinbach's Pinot Blanc is in fact a blend of seventy per cent Auxerrois and thirty per cent Pinot Blanc, as Alsace labelling law permits.
In Alsace the term Pinot Blanc may be used for wines made from any or all of Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vinified white, so what is in the bottle depends entirely on the grower. Weinbach's version leans on Auxerrois, a variety that DNA work suggests is a cross of Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir, and which brings a rounder, softer frame than Pinot Blanc alone. The fruit comes from two sources: forty-five-year-old vines in the biodynamically farmed Clos des Capucins, and a plot on the limestone and clay soils at the foot of the Altenbourg. As with the dry Rieslings, the grapes were whole-bunch pressed, then fermented and raised for eight months in large-format wood, where earlier vintages were kept in tank.
Ready now and best over the next three years. Serve at 10-12°C with quiche, grilled chicken or a plate of charcuterie.
