Weinbach Alsace Théo Riesling 2022

Weinbach Alsace Théo Riesling comes entirely from the Clos des Capucins, the walled monopole that surrounds the estate at the foot of the Schlossberg.

Domaine Weinbach sits at Kaysersberg in the Haut-Rhin, in a clos that takes its name from the Capuchin friars who arrived in the area in 1619. The vineyard is well sheltered from wind by the surrounding hills and walls, and its soils are sand, alluvial pebble and granitic gravel rather than the granite of the grand cru hill above. Those sandy soils are the reason the low-cropping vines here give a supple, pithy Riesling that is unusually accessible in its youth, in contrast to the more austere Schlossberg bottlings. Farming is biodynamic. As with all the dry Rieslings at Weinbach, the fruit was pressed as whole bunches, fermented without any yeast addition and matured in very old oak casks, in this case for ten months, so the wood contributes texture rather than flavour.

Approachable now and capable of a decade in bottle. Serve at 10-12°C with Alsatian tarte flambée, poached chicken or grilled prawns.
