Yalumba Hand Picked Shiraz + Viognier 2023

Yalumba Hand Picked Shiraz + Viognier is a perfumed, medium-weight Eden Valley red that pairs Shiraz with a small amount of white Viognier.

Adding a little Viognier to Shiraz is a tradition borrowed from Côte-Rôtie in the northern Rhône, where the white grape lifts the red's perfume and softens its texture. It suits this producer well, as it was one of Australia's Viognier pioneers. The fruit is grown in the cool, high country of Eden Valley and, as the range name says, picked by hand. Around 15% of the Shiraz went into the ferment as whole bunches, adding spicy and cedary notes, and the finished wine shows cherry, anise, lavender and potpourri over soft, fine tannins.

A flexible food wine, it goes well with duck breast, pork belly with star anise or a mushroom risotto. Serve at around 15 to 17 degrees. Drink now or over the next five years or so.
