Yalumba Paradox Shiraz 2023

Yalumba Paradox Shiraz is a silky, layered Barossa red that combines ripe fruit with savoury complexity.

Founded in 1849 by English brewer Samuel Smith, the Angaston winery remains in family hands and works closely with growers across the Barossa. The 2023 vintage was late, cool and wet, giving reds of freshness and moderate ripeness. This Shiraz is crimson, with cherry, blueberry and Black Forest cake aromas, hints of vanilla and roasted coffee bean from oak, and a savoury note of olive paste with blue florals. On the palate it is mouth-coating and supple, with black fruit, rhubarb, cranberry and liquorice held by fine tannins and refreshing acidity.

Try it with a slow-roasted leg of lamb with rosemary, smoky barbecue brisket or eggplant parmigiana. Pour at around 16 to 18 degrees; a short decant helps it open. Good now and over the medium term.
