Yokel Grenache 2024

Yokel Grenache is a medium-bodied Swan Valley Grenache from old bush vines.

The vines belong to Eugenio Valenti at Vino Italia, planted by the Valenti family in the 1950s and still tended and hand picked by them before the fruit heads to Jo Perry. Bush-vine Grenache of that age in the Swan Valley is a genuine resource, and there is not much of it left. Fruit was destemmed into open fermenters with some whole bunches laid in at the bottom, then given ten days on skins with daily plunging. It was basket pressed gently to tank, racked off the heavy lees, and bottled with a dash of sulphur. No oak, no filtration.

Raspberry, red plum and orange peel, with a light earthiness, gentle tannin and a bright finish that makes the glass disappear. Chill it briefly and serve at 14 degrees. Roast chicken, grilled lamb, a tomato and basil pasta, or a plate of pork rillettes.
