Description
Valle Dei Lunghi is a skin-fermented Arneis from 80-year-old vines interplanted with Nebbiolo, a parcel Alberto Oggero nicknames 'The Outsider'.
The site lies within the Anime vineyard at Santo Stefano Roero and is sparse and almost wild in appearance, with guyot-pruned Arneis and Nebbiolo vines growing together in the old manner. Roero is sandy country, but this parcel holds a higher proportion of clay, which provides greater extract and binds the wine closely to the ground it comes from. Arneis is normally handled as a fresh, early-drinking white; Oggero instead treats it as a red, hand-picking the fruit and giving it 14 days on skins in concrete. Maturation continued in cement tanks over 14 months, followed by a year in bottle before release. No oak is used at any point. What emerges is a textured, faintly tannic white that has little in common with a standard Roero Arneis.
Ready now and will keep for several years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, grilled vegetables or a washed-rind cheese.
