Albino Rocca Barbaresco 2022

Albino Rocca's Barbaresco is built around old vines at Meruzzano, with young-vine fruit from the family's Cottà and Ronchi cru holdings.

Barbaresco DOCG covers four communes east of Alba on marl soils a little richer and warmer than Serralunga's, giving Nebbiolo that keeps its structure but opens sooner. The Rocca family, based in the village of Barbaresco, has long drawn the classic component of this wine from a parcel of old vines at Meruzzano. It now also takes in a selection of younger-vine fruit from the estate's cru sites, including Cottà in Neive and Ronchi, which lends the blend a broader palette than a single parcel could. The winemaking is deliberate: three weeks on skins to build tannic structure, then twenty months maturing exclusively in large, low-impact oak botti so that the wood supports the wine without marking it. For a straight Barbaresco, it sets a high benchmark.

Approachable after two or three years and good for a dozen or more. Serve at 16-18°C with braised beef, mushroom tajarin or aged Toma.
