Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino 2019

Albino Rocca Barbaresco Montersino comes from one of the highest and coolest parcels in the appellation, at the southern tip near Treiso.

Montersino sits at 320 metres at the southern edge of Barbaresco, close to Treiso, in the highest and coolest part of the appellation, and Rocca’s holding there runs to just 0.42 hectares. Albino Rocca is a third-generation estate based at Barbaresco itself, now run by Angelo Rocca’s daughters, working mostly from single sites and maturing its Barbaresco in large oak. The south-facing vines were planted in 1998 by Angelo Rocca and are rooted in very poor clay and limestone with thin layers of sandstone; the sandstone contributes finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca has pointed out that this soil type, known locally as the Formazione di Lequio, resembles what is found in Monforte and in parts of chalky Serralunga over in Barolo. The combination of cool site and lean soils gives a Barbaresco that is aromatic and finely boned but with the tannic frame the appellation is known for, matured in large oak in the house manner.

Best given five years and good for fifteen or more; serve at 16–18°C with braised beef, hare ragù or aged Toma.
