Description
Albino Rocca Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto is drawn from a tiny, effectively monopole parcel on the sunnier side of the Ovello ridge.
The Ovello cru spans a ridge in the north of Barbaresco with vines on both slopes, and within it sit several historically delimited parcels; Vigna Loreto is one, a small plot that Rocca farms alone and first bottled separately in 1990. The vines are around forty-five years old. Albino Rocca is a third-generation estate based at Barbaresco itself, now run by Angelo Rocca’s daughters, working mostly from single sites and maturing its Barbaresco in large oak. Loreto lies on the south-western side of the ridge, directly facing the moderating influence of the Tanaro, so nights here are cooler than on the far side of the cru. Its clay and limestone soils are sandier and lighter than the rest of Ovello, which brings finesse, while the rules require fruit destined for the parcel name to be cropped ten hectolitres per hectare lower than the rest of the cru, which brings density back into the balance.
Give it five years and it will hold for fifteen or more; serve at 16–18°C with braised veal, truffled pasta or aged Castelmagno.
