Description
Albino Rocca's Dolcetto d'Alba is drawn from four parcels across the Barbaresco zone, including vines planted in 1960 and 1978.
Dolcetto ripens earlier than Nebbiolo and is traditionally planted on the sites that Nebbiolo cannot use, which is why so much Dolcetto d'Alba is made as a simple, early-drinking red. Rocca approaches it differently. The backbone has always come from mature vines in Barbaresco itself and at San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, southeast of Alba, and newer parcels at Neive and Treiso now round the wine out into something close to a survey of the Barbaresco district. The Barbaresco vines date from 1960 and 1978; their age, together with sensibly restrained yields, gives more depth and grip than the garden-variety example. Winemaking is unfussy, without new oak, keeping Dolcetto's dark fruit, low acidity and gently bitter almond close intact.
Best drunk over the next two or three years. Serve at 16°C, or lightly cooled, with agnolotti, salumi or a bowl of braised beans and sausage.
