Albino Rocca Nebbiolo d'Alba 2024

Albino Rocca's Nebbiolo d'Alba comes from a single vineyard between Barolo and Barbaresco, in the corner of Seno d'Elvio the locals call Terra di Mezzo.

Nebbiolo d'Alba covers the ground around Alba that falls outside the Barolo and Barbaresco zones, and it is where the variety shows its perfume without the tannic demands of the two senior appellations. As with most Rocca wines, this is a single-site bottling: a parcel in the westernmost section of the Seno d'Elvio subzone, sitting between the two great communes, which is how it came by the name Terra di Mezzo, or Middle Earth. Vine age runs from fifteen to sixty years, so there is a real core of older material in the blend. The family, based in Barbaresco, matured the wine for eight months in large Austrian and German oak casks, a short enough raising in big enough vessels that the oak works on texture rather than flavour.

Ready on release and holding well for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with veal, mushroom risotto or a plate of cured meats.
