Alfredo Maestro Amanda Rosado 2023

Amanda is a dry rosado made from old Garnacha Tintorera vines on the high ground of the Duero valley.

Alfredo Maestro works from Peñafiel in the Duero valley, largely outside the Ribera del Duero DO, and has built his reputation on low-intervention wines from old vines. Amanda draws on Garnacha Tintorera—better known internationally as Alicante Bouschet—planted between 30 and 90 years ago on clay-calcareous and alluvial soils above 700 metres. It is one of the few red varieties with red flesh as well as red skin, so even a short maceration gives real colour. The fruit was fermented in steel on wild yeasts after around 20 hours on skins, then raised in tank rather than wood to protect the freshness and cut of the fruit. The wine is bottled with nothing added and nothing taken away, which in practice means no fining, no filtration and minimal sulphur, so a little sediment or haze is to be expected.

Drink it young and well chilled, at 8–10°C, with charcuterie, grilled vegetables or a paella.
