Alfredo Maestro El Rey Del Glam 2021

El Rey del Glam is a whole-bunch Garnacha split evenly between granite in the Sierra de Gredos and the sand and limestone of Peñafiel.

Half the fruit comes from Navarredondilla, high in the Sierra de Gredos at around 1,100 metres, where Garnacha grows on granitic rock and sand; the other half from Peñafiel in Valladolid, on clay and limestone between 700 and 920 metres. The two sites ripen at different rates and contribute different things, the mountain fruit perfume and acidity, the valley fruit flesh. Alfredo Maestro harvested by hand and put the clusters into tank without crushing or destemming for a natural fermentation with daily pump-overs and no additions. The wine was then taken outside into the cold of a Castilian winter to clarify and stabilise by itself, a traditional alternative to fining and filtration, and racked one final time before bottling. No oak is used, so the wine is all fruit, stem-spice and structure.

Drink now and over the next three or four years, served cool at around 16°C, with charcuterie, grilled vegetables or roast chicken.
