Alfredo Maestro Tejero Lovamor Albillo 2023

Lovamor is a lightly skin-fermented white from Albillo Mayor vines planted between 1891 and 1910 in the Duero valley.

Albillo Mayor is the local white of the Ribera del Duero, long used in small proportions in the reds and only recently taken seriously as a wine in its own right. Alfredo Maestro sources this from a collection of pre-phylloxera-era plantings scattered across the Duero valley at 770 to 1,000 metres, on limestone and clay. Old vines at that altitude give small crops and slow ripening, which is what holds the acidity in a variety not naturally rich in it. The fruit is hand-harvested and destemmed, then given a short period on skins before a natural fermentation in stainless steel. There is no malolactic fermentation and no additions of any kind. In this release the earlier-picked parcels supply line and brightness while the later fruit brings texture and depth, producing a white with grip rather than obvious fruit sweetness.

Drink now and over the next three to four years. Serve at 10–12°C with roast pork, grilled octopus or a well-aged Manchego.
