Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Rouge 2020

Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Rouge is a three-parcel Pinot Noir built on vines of sixty, seventy and eighty years.

Bourgogne Rouge is the regional appellation of Burgundy, and its quality depends almost entirely on where the fruit sits and how old the vines are. Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, run by brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet from Dezize-lès-Maranges, assembles this wine from three sources: a third from a parcel of old vines in the Hautes-Côtes, a third from village-level vines in Maranges, and the remainder from a Bourgogne parcel on the edge of Puligny-Montrachet. The Puligny component brings perfume, Maranges brings depth of fruit, and the Hautes-Côtes brings structure and high-toned lift. The age of the vines is unusual for a wine at this level, with sixty, seventy and eighty-year-old plantings all contributing. The wine was naturally fermented in concrete tanks with roughly 20 per cent whole bunches and aged only in used barrels, Marc Bachelet judging that the flesh of the fruit needed no new oak.

Bright and juicy, ready now and good for four or five years. Serve at 16°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart.
