Description

Bachelet-Monnot Bourgogne Rouge is a regional Burgundy assembled from three parcels of unusually old Pinot Noir.

Bachelet-Monnot is based at Maranges, at the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, and is better known for white wine, which makes this red something of a sleeper. It is drawn from three sources in roughly equal parts: a parcel of old-vine Pinot Fin in the Hautes-Côtes, village-level vines in Maranges, and a Bourgogne parcel on the edge of Puligny-Montrachet. Each contributes something different, with the Puligny fruit bringing perfume, Maranges depth, and the Hautes-Côtes structure and lift. The vine age is remarkable for a wine at this level, with 60, 70 and 80-year-old plantings in the blend. Fermentation is spontaneous in concrete tank with 20 per cent whole bunches, and the wine spends a year in wood, 20 per cent of it new, followed by six months in tank before bottling.

Drink it over the next five years with roast chicken, charcuterie or a dish of braised mushrooms. Serve at 16 degrees.
