Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru Clos de la Boutière comes from a single parcel of eighty-year-old massale selection vines.

Maranges is the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune, running across three communes below Santenay, and its premiers crus sit on slopes that catch good southerly light. Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, the estate of brothers Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, owns half of this particular clos. The name Boutière may derive from an old French term for the end of the field, which suits a vineyard that sits on the Santenay border at the very end of the Clos Roussots. What sets it apart from the domaine's other Maranges parcels is a higher proportion of clay in the soil, and that shows directly in the added richness of the wine. The fruit comes from a single parcel of eighty-year-old massale selection vines, which brings both ripeness and power to the glass. The wine was entirely destemmed this vintage.

Give it two or three years and drink over the following decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast beef, duck confit or a mature comté.
