Description
Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc is a white from a small parcel of 40-year-old vines at the top of the largest climat in Maranges.
Maranges lies at the far southern end of the Côte de Beaune, next to Santenay, and is far better known for red wine than white. La Fussière is its largest premier cru at almost 35 hectares, facing south towards the start of the Côte Chalonnaise on a slope running between 290 and 400 metres, on marly limestone rich in crinoidal fragments. Marc and Alexandre Bachelet farm from Dezize-lès-Maranges and have built their reputation chiefly on white wine, so a Chardonnay from these red-wine soils is less of a departure than it looks. Alongside their red from the same climat, they have long made this exceptionally pure and taut white from the highest reaches of the vineyard, where the soil is thinnest and the ripening slowest. The cuvée has returned to the range after an absence.
Best from two to six years, with the structure to go longer. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, seared scallops or a wedge of gruyère.
