Description
Bachelet-Monnot's Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc comes from a small parcel of 40-year-old vines at the top of the appellation's largest climat.
Maranges lies at the very southern end of the Côte de Beaune, next to Santenay, and La Fussière is its biggest climat at almost 35 hectares. It faces south towards the start of the Côte Chalonnaise, on a slope running from 290 to 400 metres, on marly, crinoidal limestone. Bachelet-Monnot makes a well-regarded red from these soils as well, but has long drawn an exceptionally pure and taut white from a small block of 40-year-old vines occupying the vineyard's highest reaches. Frost cost the site almost 70 per cent of its crop in this year, so quantities are small. The wine was raised with 20 per cent new oak, a restrained figure for a premier cru white, and it is chalky and beautifully pitched, with crisp apple and white peach fruit and a tangy, citric snap at the end.
Drink over the next five to eight years, with grilled fish, roast chicken or a soft goat's cheese. Serve at 10–12°C.
