Description
Bachelet-Monnot Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière Blanc is a white from the highest reaches of the largest climat in Maranges.
Maranges sits at the far southern end of the Côte de Beaune, next to Santenay, and is far better known for red wine than white. La Fussière is its biggest premier cru, covering close to 35 hectares on a south-facing slope between 290 and 400 metres that looks across towards the start of the Côte Chalonnaise. The soils are marly limestone. Alongside their red from the same vineyard, Bachelet-Monnot has long made a white here from a small parcel of 40-year-old vines occupying the top of the slope, where the extra altitude keeps the acidity firm. The wine is raised with 25 per cent new oak, which leaves the fruit and the chalky finish in the foreground. It is a taut, precise style of white Burgundy for the appellation and the price.
Drinking now and worth keeping five to seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast snapper, chicken in cream sauce or a leek tart.
