Description

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges Vieilles Vignes Rouge is an old-vine cuvée bottled only five times to date, drawn from two plots of red clay and chalk.

Maranges spans the communes of Cheilly, Dezize and Sampigny-lès-Maranges at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, where the slope turns and the soils carry more clay than in the villages further north. Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is based here, and this is a cuvée the brothers make only when the old vines give them enough to justify it. The fruit comes from two plots, Le Chamery in Cheilly-lès-Maranges and Le Clos in Sampigny-lès-Maranges, where the vines are over fifty years old and the soils tend towards red clay shot through with rocky chalk. Alexandre Bachelet finds these terroirs reasonably warm, so he uses a significant proportion of whole bunches, 40 per cent in this release, to balance the depth of the fruit. The wine carries dark cherry and bitter chocolate character with plenty of powdery tannin.

Good drinking now and better still with a few years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, braised beef or a hard sheep's cheese.
