Description

Bachelet-Monnot Maranges Vieilles Vignes Rouge is an old-vine village cuvée from two plots of massal-selection Pinot Noir more than 50 years old.

Maranges is the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune, spread across the three communes of Cheilly, Dezize and Sampigny-lès-Maranges, and it remains one of the last corners of the Côte where mature vines can be had at sensible prices. This wine draws on Le Chamery in Cheilly and Le Clos in Sampigny, where the soils tend towards red clay shot through with rocky chalk. Alexandre Bachelet describes both terroirs as reasonably warm sites, and uses a significant proportion of whole bunches, 40 per cent in this cuvée, to balance the depth of fruit they give. New oak is held to 25 per cent. The result is a village wine with more flesh and grip than the appellation is usually credited with, framed by the aromatic style the domaine pursues across its reds.

Enjoyable now and better again with three or four years in bottle. Serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, duck confit or a mushroom ragù.
