Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 2021

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières comes from a low-yielding parcel in the rocky lower eastern pocket of this premier cru.

Folatières is among the most highly regarded premier crus of Puligny-Montrachet, sitting at the same altitude as Chevalier-Montrachet and bordering Clavoillon, a stone's throw from Pucelles. The name is said to derive from folles-terres, or crazy earth, a reference to the violent erosion these slopes can suffer in heavy rain. The Bachelet brothers work a low-yielding parcel of forty-year-old vines here, next to holdings of Leflaive and just below the Truffière vineyard. Their roughly half-hectare plot lies in the lower eastern part of the vineyard, where the soil is very rocky and the vines set tiny bunches with little juice; Marc Bachelet observes that although the vines are only forty years old they behave as though they were twice that age. Just two barrels were produced, and the Australian allocation runs to eighteen bottles.

Give it two or three years and drink over the following decade; serve at 10–12°C with roast bream, chicken with morels or a hard alpine cheese.
