Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 2022

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières comes from a rocky pocket at the lower, eastern end of the climat, alongside the vines of Leflaive.

Folatières is one of Puligny's most highly regarded premier crus, sitting at the same altitude as Chevalier-Montrachet and bordering Clavoillon, with Pucelles a stone's throw away. The name is said to derive from folles-terres, crazy earth, a reference to the violent erosion these slopes can suffer in heavy rain. The Bachelet parcel runs to around half a hectare of low-yielding, 40-year-old vines just below the Truffière vineyard, on very rocky ground. Marc Bachelet notes that the plants behave as though they were twice their age, giving tiny bunches with little juice, which concentrates what comes out of the press. Vinification follows the house pattern for the whites: spontaneous fermentation and raising in 350-litre barrels, with oak kept as a frame rather than a flavour.

Give it three to five years and expect it to hold well beyond a decade. Serve at 10-12°C with roast turbot, scallops or a truffled risotto.
