Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2020

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts is known locally as Petit Bâtard for the depth of the wines it gives.

Les Referts sits on the Meursault side of Puligny-Montrachet, and its clay-rich soils have earned it that nickname: the wines routinely show a depth, quality and texture reminiscent of the nearby Grand Cru Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bachelet brothers farm a 0.45-hectare parcel of forty-year-old vines near the top of the slope, next door to Sauzet's holding and beneath the Les Combettes Premier Cru. The soils in their parcel are very stony, which brings generosity and flesh to the wine, while the underlying limestone ensures there is no shortage of mineral charge to balance it. The wine was raised entirely in 350-litre barrels, a size the domaine favours because the lower ratio of wood to wine keeps oak flavour out of the picture.

Best from three years and through the following twelve. Serve at 10–12°C with roast poultry, richer seafood or Beaufort.
