Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2021

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts is a premier cru white from a vineyard known locally as Petit Bâtard for the depth of its wines.

Les Referts sits on the Meursault side of Puligny-Montrachet and earns its local nickname from clay-rich soils and the texture and density of the wines it routinely delivers, at times recalling the nearby grand cru Bâtard-Montrachet. The Bachelet brothers farm a 0.45-hectare parcel of forty-year-old vines near the top of the slope, next to Sauzet's holding and below the premier cru Les Combettes. The soils here are very stony, which lends generosity and flesh without dulling the mineral charge that marks good Puligny. The wine was raised entirely in 350-litre barrels, the size the domaine favours for its premier crus, and fermentation was spontaneous. Only three barrels were made in this vintage, so quantities are small.

Best after two or three years in bottle and good for a decade; serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a mild washed-rind cheese.
