Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts 2022

Bachelet-Monnot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Referts comes from a vineyard known locally as Petit Bâtard for the clay-rich soils it shares with the neighbouring grand cru.

Les Referts lies on the Meursault side of Puligny, below Les Combettes, and its nickname reflects both the geology and the depth and texture of the wines it routinely gives. The Bachelet brothers farm a 0.45-hectare parcel of 40-year-old vines near the top of the slope, next door to Sauzet's holding. The soils here are very stony, which brings generosity and flesh, but there is no shortage of mineral charge or chewy extract to hold it in line. As across the domaine's whites, the fruit ferments spontaneously, and this cuvée was raised entirely in 350-litre barrels, a quarter of them new; the larger format means a lower ratio of wood to wine than standard barriques and keeps the oak in the background.

Best from three years and good for ten or more. Serve at 10-12°C with scallops, roast chicken or a creamy fish pie.
