Description
Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Charmes Dessus sits just below the Clos Rousseau premier cru on a site the growers describe as a white terroir.
Santenay lies at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, and Les Charmes Dessus is on its south-eastern slopes, immediately under the premier cru Clos Rousseau. Although it is not far from the domaine’s Clos de la Boutière, the terroir is markedly different: red clay and rocky limestone here produce aromatic, racy reds with finesse and freshness rather than weight. Marc Bachelet points out that the site is often called a white terroir and that it always gives the best acidity among the domaine’s reds, whatever the season. The wine comes from half a hectare of 50-year-old vines and was fermented with roughly a quarter whole bunches. It is fleshy, with plummy and anise-scented fruit leading to a long, powdery close.
Approachable now and holding for eight years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, pork belly or a mushroom and lentil dish.
