Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Charmes Dessus 2024

Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Charmes Dessus is a village red from a limestone site the domaine describes as a white terroir.

Les Charmes Dessus lies on the south-eastern slopes of Santenay, just below the Clos Rousseau premier cru. Although it is not far from Clos de la Boutière in Maranges, the terroir is markedly different: red clay over rocky limestone, which gives aromatic, racy reds of finesse rather than weight. The site is often referred to locally as a white terroir, and Marc Bachelet says it always delivers the best acidity of the domaine's reds, whatever the season. The brothers farm half a hectare of 50-year-old vines here. Fermentation is spontaneous, the whole-bunch proportion is set parcel by parcel, and the wine is raised in barrel with a low share of new wood so that the lift and spice of the site come through. The tannins are fine and powdery rather than assertive.

Drink over the next five to seven years with roast quail, salmon or a young Comté. Serve at 16°C.
