Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Prarons Dessus 2020

Bachelet-Monnot Santenay Les Prarons Dessus comes from one of the appellation's northernmost vineyards, sitting directly against the Chassagne premier cru of Morgeot.

Santenay closes out the Côte de Beaune to the south and is planted mostly to Pinot Noir, its reds ranging from lean and stony to genuinely fleshy depending on the site. Les Prarons Dessus is at the northern edge, next to Morgeot and just beneath the premier cru of Clos de Tavannes, and the chalky soils here carry a good proportion of red clay. Combined with old vines, that clay gives a darker, rounder Santenay with more flesh and finer tannins than the appellation's reputation would suggest. Marc and Alexandre Bachelet, based at Dezize-lès-Maranges, have moved steadily into Santenay over the past decade. This cuvée was fermented with one-third whole bunches and raised in traditional 228-litre barrels, of which 20 per cent were new, a light enough touch to keep the fruit and the clay in the foreground.

Drinking from two years and holding for eight or more. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushrooms on toast or slow-cooked pork shoulder.
