Balthasar Ress Hattenheim Engelmannsberg Riesling QBA Trocken is a dry Riesling from a single site above the Rheingau village of Hattenheim.

The Rheingau is the stretch where the Rhine turns west and the slopes on its right bank face south for the length of the day; it is the region where Riesling was first taken seriously in Germany, and where dry styles have long been the norm rather than the exception. Engelmannsberg is an Einzellage within Hattenheim, on soils of marl and loess on the slope above the village. Weingut Balthasar Ress was founded at Hattenheim in 1870 and remains in family hands, farming across several of the classic Rheingau villages. Trocken means the wine is fermented out dry, while QbA is the regional quality tier that sits below the Prädikat categories and says nothing in itself about how good the wine is.

Serve at 10 to 12°C with river fish, pork, white asparagus in season or lighter Asian dishes; a dry Rheingau Riesling of this kind will also gain over five years or so in bottle.
